BIS CRS: The Certification Scheme that India has Made Mandatory for Electronic Products
BIS CRS refers to the mandatory certification scheme that has been brought in as a measure to guarantee the safety, quality, and compliance of electronic and IT goods being marketed in India. Through this scheme, companies need to follow the Indian Standards set forth, and their products can only be legally manufactured, imported, distributed, or sold after they have met this requirement. BIS CRS is instrumental in the protective measures for consumers against the dangerous and substandard products on the one hand and the regulation of the fast-expanding electronics industry on the other.
Objectives of BIS CRS Certification
BIS CRS protects the Consumer by ensuring that they have access to safe, compliant, reliable, and high-quality Electronic and IT products. It also addresses the concerns of a rapidly growing electronics and IT Industry in India by regulating this sector.
BIS CRS provides a standardized means for Regulators to monitor compliance and establish clear definitions of "acceptable safety performance" and "acceptable quality".
There are Three Primary Objectives of the BIS CRS:-
1. To protect Consumer interests through the certification of electronic products
2. To establish and regulate a minimum standard of Product Quality and Reliability and
3. To create an environment of fair competition and a level playing field, in which all manufacturers are required to meet the same safety standards.
The BIS CRS also supports environmental objectives by regulating energy consumption and limiting the circulation of non-compliant or hazardous products.
Range of Products Covered by BIS CRS
BIS CRS covers a wide variety of electronics and IT products that include not only daily usage ones but also industrial application ones. Examples are consumer electronics, power adapters, lighting products, IT equipment, and several other categories that have been notified.
The list of products that are covered keeps growing with the advancements in technology and the increasing regulatory requirements. Any manufacturer that deals with notified products needs to comply with BIS CRS requirements, whether the products are made locally or imported.
Any business in the electronics sector needs to have a good understanding of the BIS CRS and must also comply with it. BIS CRS, by focusing on safety, quality, and trust, is a key driver of a reliable and sustainable market.
